Living with Water

Program Dates:
May 15 through June 16, 2008

Courses:
Students participating in the program will be able to take up to six (6) credit hours including:

  • LA 4501 (1-3) Field Studies in Landscape Architecture
  • LA 4502 (3) Independent Study in Landscape Architecture (consent of instructor).

Students taking LA 4501 will be required to fully participate in the first week at LSU planned class and field trip activities and the three week program in the Netherlands.  They will also be required to maintain and submit a journal, and research, write and submit a 1,500 word reflective paper.

Students taking LA 4502 will also be required to fully participate in the first week at LSU planned class and field trip activities and the three week program in the Netherlands.  They will also be required to maintain and submit a journal and research, write and submit a project research paper of 12 to 15 pages and fully participate in the two week post-Netherlands activities on the LSU campus if they are taking both courses for six credit hours.

Eligibility Criteria
Sophomore status or 30 credit hours and 3.0 GPA or consent of instructor. The program is opened to students in the College of Art and Design, Engineering, and other students of other majors with approval of the instructor.  Participation will be encourage of students from other university campuses in Louisiana, such as University of New Orleans (Urban Studies) and University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and other universities.

Program Fee

Estimated at $2,135. LSU tuition, most meals, and air fare are not included in this fee. The program fee includes Program fee that will cover APA and trip insurance fees, lodging (including breakfast), ground transportation in Holland, museum fees, and activity events.

Working Itinerary
May 13-17:
On campus seminar with directed readings, lectures and one field trip to the New Orleans area.

May 18-June 7:
Seminars, field trips, lectures, and office visits in the Netherlands. Return to Baton Rouge June 8, 2008.

June 9-13:
Individual student assignment. Final reflective paper or project report (hardcopy and CD with PDF file) due July 30, 2008.

Bruce G. Sharky, Professor, Robert S. Reich School of Landscape Architecture

Professor Sharky has led seven summer study programs to Mexico, one program to China in 2006, and led a group for a semester in Portugal in 2003.  He conducted urban planning flood and storm water management strategy research in the Netherlands under a BOR-NSF Links Grant in May-June 2007.
