Living with Water

The LSU in The Netherlands study abroad program is a complement to and expansion upon the lessons and opportunities students have on campus to learn about landscape planning and urban design strategies for mitigating flooding and tropical storm impacts.  The program will provide students with a unique learning experience they would be unable to gain on campus.  Holland is currently employing he latest urban design and spatial planning strategies currently employed and being developed in Holland in light of the rapidly changing environmental conditions affecting flood and storm water management in urban and coastal areas of the country.  Participating students will gain the knowledge, first hand experience, and understanding of a range of urban design and community planning strategies for flood and storm water management in the Netherlands and to explore their potential application in Louisiana and the Mexico Gulf Region.

The Netherlands is the ideal location for investigating advanced urban and community design strategies including some of the most exciting contemporary landscape and urban design projects to emerge in Europe in recent years.

The program will be based in the city of Delft.  Delft is centrally located between Rotterdam and the Haag, south of Amsterdam.  Public transportation is convenient, affording the possibility of day and weekend trips to other locations in Europe, including Belgium and Germany.  We will have access to classroom and library facilities at the Technical University of Delft.
