LSU in Paris

Program Description
Since the birth of the United States, Americans have been drawn to Paris. Celebrated expatriates have included Benjamin Franklin, James Fenimore Cooper, Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Stein, Aaron Copeland, Richard Wright, and Jim Morrison. To Americans, Paris seems both excitingly foreign and invitingly familiar, a city that engages the mind as it enchants the heart. Ernest Hemingway once wrote that if you are lucky enough to live in Paris as a young person, "then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast."

From the narrow medieval streets near Notre Dame to the futuristic dimensions of the Pompidou Center, Paris is a living monument to centuries of French history, architecture, and tradition. From its grand boulevards to its ancient quartiers, the city unfolds a dazzling panorama. This capital of culture, glamour, and fashion reflects a passion for style in its buildings and public squares. Music, drama, and dance flourish at the Comedie Francaise, the Opera, and the Theatre National, while such museums as the Louvre, the Cluny, and the Musée d'Orsay offer an incomparable array of artistic treasures. Yet the special charm of Paris resides in everyday scenes at the neighborhood bakery, the local street market, or the nearest café.

Summer study in the Left Bank indeed affords an unforgettable experience. LSU in Paris features almost five weeks of concentrated classes and group excursions. As a participant, you will earn six to nine hours of LSU credit, pursuing courses in art, French language, literature, culture, and cinema, all adapted to the special opportunities of Paris and filled with diverse extramural activities.

You will be lodged in double rooms at the Foyer International Jean Monnet (FIAP). The FIAP is a modern, comfortable residence center located near the metro line to the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees. It is two metro stops from the theatre and entertainment district of Montparnasse, and a short walk from the catacombs and the Park Montsouris.

Academic Information
The program emphasizes academic participation; class attendance is required. You are strongly advised to complete a significant portion of your assigned reading before departure for Paris. Textbook lists and syllabi will be available in late April. Courses run from June 1 through July 1.

As a participant in this program, you must register for six hours of credit. Although it is not recommended, you may register for nine hours of credit if you have a 3.0 grade-point average and obtain permission from the program director. You must have completed 60 hours of credit or permission to waive this requirement before registering for a 4000-level course.

You may also arrange independent study projects in any discipline and then complete the work in Paris. Consult your academic adviser and secure a faculty sponsor from the discipline involved to obtain permission for this kind of work. The project must be approved and initiated before your departure and it must relate to the French cultural setting.

You must have your course selections approved before departure by your departmental adviser and college dean as part of the registration process.

You are especially encouraged to register for a course in French. If you desire a French-intensive experience, you may request a room with another student wishing to speak mainly in French. There may also be an opportunity for you to spend a weekend in the city of Troyes, as a guest of the Association France-Louisiane, to participate in their annual Fête Francophone.

Orientation Sessions:
There will be two orientation sessions held at LSU in April. If you are not an LSU student, information will be mailed to you. Please e-mail Kevin Bongiorni at kbongiorni@lsu.edu for more specific information on the Orientation Sessions.
