Orientation presentation

Program Description
LSU in London and Edinburgh, gives students the opportunity to live and study in two of Europe's most exciting cities, London and Edinburgh. The 2012 program has been designed to expose students to the rich history, theatre, media, politics, literature, and culture of London and Edinburgh. We will attend plays at the Globe Theatre in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company's theatre in Stratford. We will tour Shakespeare's birthplace and take walking tours with historical, theatrical, political, and literary significance. We will visit major museums, like the British Museum, the Tates, and the V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum).

In addition, students on the 2012 program will have the unique experience of being in London during the run-up to the 2012 Olympic games!

Advice from students who went last year:
We asked the students on the 2011 program to tell us what advice they would have for future participants. Here's what they said:

On packing:

  • Pack lightly!
  • Check out the weather in London [and Edinburgh] before you pack
  • Bring warm clothes
  • Bring more spending money than you think you will need, especially for food
  • Roll your clothing to save room and pack an extra bag with you for taking home souvenirs
  • Start packing a few days in advance and make a list
  • Bring a power strip and an adapter
  • Don't bring toiletries, buy them there
  • Bring a good rainjacket and waterproof shoes
  • If you can't pack lightly, bring two bags. 50 lbs of luggage is really heavy, and you'll want to buy some stuff in London [and Edinburgh]
  • Bring half the clothes and twice the money!

On classes:

  • Try and do some of your assignments beforehand
  • Read as much as you can before you leave the US
  • Be prepared to work and study, it's not all touring

On the program:

  • Know what hotel you're going to when you land and be prepared for a Customs Official to ask you
  • Make sure to go to the Portobello Road to Camden markets!
  • Be aware of the Dollar to Pound exchange rate and make a budget of how much you're spending so you don't run out of money
  • Go see plays!
