Faculty
Dr. Russell Carson will be directing the program. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pedagogical and Sport Sciences in the Department of Kinesiology. He lived in Rome, Italy, for 2 years (’97-’99) working as a physical education/health teacher at Marymount International School. As an undergraduate student himself, Dr. Carson spent a semester abroad (‘96) studying physical education at the Chelsea School of Physical Education, Sports Science, Dance and Leisure, University of Brighton, in Eastbourne, England. He has since received a M.S. in Sport Psychology and Organization and a Ph.D. in Pedagogy. Throughout these experiences, he has gained an appreciation for culture, the ideological significance of sport in culture, and the historical and contemporary meanings of sport involvement; each will enrich his summer abroad course in New Zealand. Dr. Carson directed a very successful academic abroad trip (first ever in the Dept. of Kinesiology at LSU) to Italy in the summer of 2008.
Dr. Laura Stewart is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Kinesiology. She is familiar with the challenges of traveling and living in an international setting, as she has spent extended visits to Seoul, Korea, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Italy. Along with Dr. Carson, she also was an instructor for the Kinesiology in Italy trip in Summer of 2008. She has an M.S. in health promotion and a Ph.D. in exercise physiology and nutrition and has taught a course featuring wellness.
