Business in China

Program Description
Business in China program, partially supported by the U.S. Department of Education Business and International Education Grant, provides opportunities with travel and educational experiences to gain  (1) inspiring insight into the world's most rapidly developing country through engaging in broad academic and entrepreneurial activities; (2) practical knowledge which cannot be learned in an American classroom; (3) a great sense of  understanding of the Chinese people and culture and Chinese business etiquette; and (4) broad social networks and friendships.  The activities include:

1. Experience both ancient and modern China via rich cultural excursions, Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Summer Palace, and the Terra-cotta Warriors, the 2008 Olympic Park (Bird Nest, and Water Cube), and more…

2. Visit leading businesses in China, including

–Manufacturing clusters in Guangdong, and Guangxi
–Retail clusters in Beijing
–Software clusters in Xian

3. Work with Chinese college entrepreneurship pioneering students at Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing, China to jointly identify business opportunities

4. Meet with Chinese executives and Chinese government officials

5. Develop business plans for the U.S. companies they represent with respect to choosing strategic partners and suppliers in China and identifying business opportunities in China

6. Enroll in a Chinese language course at Central University of Finance and Economics

7. Enroll in LSU courses on global trade and doing business with China with foci on:

–Learning how to succeed in executing your sourcing strategy
–Learning how foreign companies succeed in doing business in China
–Exploring opportunities of venturing into China

Program Eligibility
This program is open to all full time junior, senior undergrad students and graduate students at LSU.  It is also highly recommended for anyone having interest in doing business with China. In the event of over-enrollment, priority will be given to LSU students with majors in Business or Human Ecology. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

MGT 3203 – Independent Study in Management
ISDS 3070 – Independent Study in Information Systems and Decision Sciences
HUEC 4044 – Textiles and Apparel Economics
HUEC 3030 – Field Study in Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising 
HUEC 3091 – Reading and Research in Human Ecology
HUEC 7091 – Independent Study in Human Ecology

Expected Program Costs
$3,650
With partial support from U.S. Department of Education, the estimated program cost per person has been lowered to $3,650.  The cost for students who are awarded scholarship of $650 will be around $3,000. Final program cost may be adjusted slightly up or down to reflect airfare changes.

The cost includes:

DEPOSIT: $500 posted to fee bill upon application with APA by deadline of January 29, 2010.
Round trip airfare for flight from New Orleans to Beijing,
Domestic flights to Xian, Beihai, and Guilin in China;
Ground transportation for all scheduled course activities and excursions;
Room and board (double occupancy) for staying in China;
Some meals during scheduled visits or excursions; welcome reception, and farewell reception, local cuisine dinner at each place we visit;
Fees for all excursions and site viewing admissions;
Fees for cultural training courses, including Chinese language, Chinese calligraphy, Gongfu/Taiji during evening time; and other course activities, such as watching Gongfu show in Beijing.

Other costs:

LSU tuition for 6 credit hours
Meals other than scheduled lunches and dinners
Chinese visa fee.

Scholarships
Students enrolled in the Business in China program with GPA 3.0 or better are eligible for applying the U.S. Department of Education Scholarship of $650

Up to twenty scholarships will be awarded to students who enroll the program and are qualified for scholarship.
