Swahili/AAAS 2004 Intermediate Swahili II (Prerequisite: Swahili/AAAS 2003)

As can be seen from the notation above, LSU Swahili courses are offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, but they are cross-listed as AAAS courses, Kiswahili being, so far, the only African Language offered at LSU.

You must register for a minimum of 6 credit hours. Enrolling for 9 credit hours requires the permission of the program Director. The Office of Academic Programs Abroad registers participants for courses in this program. More details will be mailed to you after your application has been accepted. In the meantime, however, prospective participants should bear in mind that this is an intensive, total immersion program, demanding more work hours daily, i.e. Monday through Thursday, than is the case  in a normal semester here at LSU. This is due to the fact that two semesters’ work is compressed into six weeks, i.e. three weeks per course level. However, there is still ample time and opportunity for fun. For, learning, especially study abroad, should be fun to be worth the while.

Eligibility
The program is open to students from all colleges and majors. If you are an undergraduate, you must have a minimum 2.5 GPA to participate; graduate students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to participate. Non-LSU students must submit a copy of their most recent transcript upon application and pay a fee of  $30.00 in a separate check made payable to LSU.

Program Fee
The Program fee is estimated to be: US $3520,  excluding air fare. However, this price may change. The program will initially be based at Bagamoyo Beach Resort Hotel, with room and full board provided. Prospective participants would be well-advised to carry US $500 or more for their own personal expenditures. The air fare is estimated to be anywhere between US $1000 and US $ 2500, round trip. Much depends on when one buys one’s ticket.

Faculty
Mwalimu Deogratias K. Tungaraza is the sole Instructor for all Swahili courses at LSU. He is also both the Swahili Safari Director and Instructor. He can  be reached  at: mwaldeo@lsu.edu.

Deadlines
Application deadline is March 3, 2008. An application with authorization to debit (LSU students) or a check (non-LSU students) for $500 deposit must be received with the fees for Spring Semester.  The balance is due at the time of payment of summer school tuition and fees.  The deposit is non-refundable after January 31, 2008.

Informational Meetings
Three Orientation Sessions are planned in the Spring Semester, dates to be posted on website and/or announced in class and via e-Mail. Dates, times, and venues will be announced later; as well as that, the itinerary will be announced after it has been confirmed. However, the flights generally leave the US to Europe, say Amsterdam or London, etc., and from there they go straight to Dar-es-Salaam, sometimes via Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Accomodations
The LSU Swahili Safari 2008 (Summer program in Tanzania, East Africa) will be hosted by the Bagamoyo Beach Resort Hotel and  the University of Dar-Es-Salaam. To enable the participants to obtain maximum benefit in both language and culture, the participants will ‘home stay,’ being hosted by University of Dar-es-Salaam Faculty and Senior Administrative Staff. The hosts/hostesses will provide two meals a day, i.e. dinner and breakfast. The participants are on their own for lunch. The lunches can cost anywhere from US $1-10; see also "Program Fee" paragraph above.
