Types of Programs Offered by Academic Programs Abroad
National Student Exchange (NSE)
Students of any major with a 2.5 GPA or higher and at least 30 credit hours can exchange for one semester or an academic year to over 180 universities in the continental U.S., as well as in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam, and even Canada. Students go for various reasons, such as to enroll in courses that LSU might not offer, to research a different region of the country, to explore their graduate school options, or simply to have a different experience. National Student Exchanges cost no more than it costs to go to LSU, and TOPS and other types of financial aid apply.
International Exchange
A large number of international opportunities are open to students with at least a 2.75 GPA through bilateral exchanges and ISEP exchanges (International Student Exchange Program consortium). Students have the opportunity to study in either English or a foreign language depending upon program location. In most cases, students pay LSU tuition as they would normally pay for a semester on campus and in some cases, students also pay LSU room and board costs as they normally would during a semester at LSU. Additionally, most financial aid including TOPS may be applied to an international program.
Summer Programs
Directed and designed by LSU faculty members, summer programs take students to destinations all over the world. For summer 2012, for example, destinations include such countries as Spain, Ireland, Germany, China, and Ecuador, and courses included English, political science, mass communication, theatre, language instruction, architecture, and history. Summer programs last from 4-6 weeks, and students take 6 hours of credit in LSU courses. For the student with summer commitments, there are opportunities to study abroad with LSU programs during spring break and intersession. Summer programs range in price from $2,000 to $4,800, which includes housing, most meals, and any excursions that are part of the program.
