National Student Exchange

"San Francisco isn't in the same country as Lakeside [Wisconsin] any more than New Orleans is in the same country as New York or Miami is in the same country as Minneapolis." —Neil Gaiman, American Gods

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is a consortium of schools in the continental United States, her territories, and Canada that have an agreement to exchange wtih each other. For a list of schools, click here. There are schools in every state, except Delaware and South Dakota, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and even Canada.

Deciding to go on an exchange is a major decision that requires a great deal of thought. Here are some of the benefits of an NSE exchange:

  • Pay either LSU tuition or the in-state tuition of the school to which you go on exchange (your "host university"). Most schools allow you to choose, although at some schools, including University of Hawaii Manoa and University of Hawaii Hilo, you must pay their in-state tuition.

  • Use your financial aid! TOPS and most forms of financial aid apply, whether you pay LSU tution or your host university's in-state tuition

  • Go your sophomore year! You can go on exchange once you have completed 30 hours

  • "Test drive" the university you want to go to for graduate school or the region of the country you want to move to after graduation. With an NSE exchange, you get the advantage of living in another part of the country without the hassle of a permanent move!

  • Don't limit yourself. Participating in a national exchange doesn't prohibit you from going on an international exchange or a summer program

  • Easily transfer the credits you earn on exchange back to LSU

  • Take courses that LSU doesn't offer. How about backpacking, ice climbing, skiing, or kayaking at the University of of Alaska Southeast? History of the Hawaiian islands while living in Hawaii? Or, take courses in French at the Université de Sherbrooke!

  • Learn independence and self-reliance
