How to Apply   General Info

Where can I study?
LSU offers programs to over thirty countries around the world.

What are the academic requirements for applying?
LSU’s semester or year reciprocal exchanges require a minimum 3.00 GPA. ISEP programs require a minimum 2.75 GPA.

Can the credit I earn abroad transfer back to LSU?
Yes.  Before leaving on a study abroad program, students obtain approval for transfer of credits they plan to earn abroad.

How much will it cost?
On most exchange programs you pay LSU tuition & fees .  With ISEP exchanges, accommodation & food costs are also comparable to those on the LSU campus. Additional costs include travel and personal expenses.  Application fees vary, according to program, but are between $200 and $475.

Can I use existing financial aid towards my study abroad program?
Yes. Almost any grant, scholarship, or loan may be used to help pay for tuition and other associated costs. In order to receive the aid, students must concurrently enroll at LSU for each semester exchanged. Contact your advisor in the Office of Student Aid & Scholarships, 202 Himes Hall, to find out how your aid may apply to your International Exchange.

Are scholarships available?
Yes.  In 106 Hatcher Hall you can get a copy of the current listing.  You can also find this list on our web site.  If you have questions about scholarships, email our study abroad coordinator, Michael Pointer, studyabroad@lsu.edu.

Do I have to know a second language?
This will depend upon the language of instruction at a particular university.  Where English is not the language of instruction, you will need at least four college-level semesters of language study before your program commences.  However, there are many countries whose universities offer courses in English.  The Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Korea, Thailand, Japan, and New Zealand are just a few.

When can I go? You can go abroad anytime, though most students go their junior year. Some colleges require that a certain number of credit hours be completed on campus, check with your Dean's office for the specific requirements of your college and to ask about possible exemption to this rule.

How long will my program last?
Programs vary in length from a semester to an academic year or a summer term.  You select the program that fits your needs.
